...Whoever disobeys me (the Prophet )
will have refused.
Indeed Allaah
sent his Prophet
with the Qur’aan as a guidance for All mankind and Jinn, however He
also sent the noble Prophet
with the Sunnah which is also revelation. Some people however, falsely
claim that the Qur’aan is the only source of revelation to be followed
and the Sunnah is not for us and is invalid today. The following will provide
the evidence that the Sunnah is indeed necessary for the understanding
of the Qur’aan and that it must be adhered to.
In Islaam; the word ‘Sunnah’ literally means a
‘path’ or ‘way’, it is everything that the Prophet
ordered us with and prohibited us from. It includes all his actions, statements
and approvals and it must be adhered to until the last day.
Allaah
has made following of the noble Prophet
a condition for obtaining Allaah's
love as He
said (which means):
"Say (O Muhammad
to mankind) if you really love Allaah, then follow me and Allaah will
love you and forgive you your sins. And Allaah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."
[Surah Aali
Imran (The Family of Imran) Verse 31]
Allaah
also says (which means):
"And whosoever Obeys Allaah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein, and that will be great success. And whosoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger, and transgress His Limits, He will cast them into the fire, to abide therein, and he shall have a disgraceful torment." [Surah An-Nisa (The Women) Verse 13 & 14]
Allaah
further says (which means):
"O you who believe! answer Allaah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allaah comes in between a man and his heart (i.e. He prevents an evil person to decide anything). And verily to him you shall (all) be gathered." [Surah Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) Verse 24]
The Prophet
said (which means):
"I am leaving among you two things, which if you cling to, you will never go astray: The Book of Allaah and my Sunnah. The two will not separate from each other, until you meet me at the Pool (Hawd)." [Takhreejul-Mishkaat (no.186)]
Hence we have been ordered to follow the commands
and prohibitions of the Prophet ,
if this were not to be the case then how would we know how to make wudhu,
pray, fast etc... since the full description of these acts are not mentioned
in the Qur’aan.
So we have been ordered to follow the commands
and prohibitions of the Prophet ,
if this were not to be the case then how would we know how to make wudhu,
pray, fast etc. since the full description of these acts are not mentioned
in the Qur’aan.
Allaah
has warned us against abandoning the Sunnah, when He
says (which means):
"Make not your calling of the Messenger among
you as your calling for one another. Allaah knows of you who slip under
shelter (of some excuse without taking permission to leave from the
Messenger ).
And let those who oppose the Messengers commandments (sunnah, orders
etc.) beware lest some fitnah (trials, calamities, disbelief, etc.)
befall them or a painful torment be afflicted on them." [Surah An-Nur
(The Light) Verse 63]
Allaah
also says (which means):
"O you who believe! do not forward (a speech or objection) in the presence of Allaah and His Messenger (the Qur'aan and Sunnah), and fear Allaah. Allaah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." [Surah Al-Hujurat (The Dwellings) Verse 1]
The Prophet
has said (which means):
"All of my Ummah will enter Paradise, except
whoever refuses." They (the companions )
said: "And who will refuse?" He
said: "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me
will have refused." [Bukhari]
Allaah
describes the plight of those who do not Obey Allaah
and His Messenger
in several places in the Qur’aan, He
says (which means):
"On the day when their faces will be tossed about in the fire, they will say, "Woes to us! Would that we had obeyed Allaah and His Messenger!" And they will say, "Our Lord! we obeyed our chiefs and great men, and they lead us astray from the right path. Our Lord! give them double suffering, and banish them utterly from your grace." [Surah Al-Ahzab (The Confederates) Verses 66, 67 & 68]
The Prophet
also warned us when he
said (which means):
"He who turns away from my Sunnah is not from me." [Bukhari]
Imaam Malik said:
"The Sunnah is like the ark of Nuh (alayhi-salam) whoever embarks upon it is saved and whoever abandons it is destroyed."
The Sunnah of our beloved Prophet
is to be followed in all affairs, we must believe as he and his companions
believed, pray like them, fast like them, worship like him and act like
them. May Allaah
enable us
to adhere to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet
and grant us salvation through adhering to it. May Allaah
guide us to the straight path, that which leads to paradise and away from
all those paths that lead to the hell fire, may he prepare us for ‘the
day on which there will be no doubt.’
